Ads Disagreement Delays Online Gambling Legislation in South Africa

8 April 2008

South Africa's National Gambling Amendment Bill, which would license and regulate online gambling, has been put on hold while Members of Parliament continue to argue about whether or not to permit licensed operators to advertise in South Africa.

The National Assembly's Portfolio Committee favors a blanket ban on online gambling advertisements, but two weeks ago National Council of Provinces' Select Committee decided against a blanket ban. The two committees must come to an agreement if the legislation is ever to pass.
