Online Gaming in Oceania
Online gaming in Oceania is dominated by online sports and race wagering, with online casino and poker largely restricted or prohibited at the domestic level in Australia and New Zealand, even though residents frequently access offshore sites. Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act 2001 bans locally licensed operators from offering online casino games and in-play sports betting to Australian residents, while allowing regulated online wagering and empowering the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to block and sanction illegal offshore sites. New Zealand currently does not license domestic online casinos, but is moving toward a regulated iGaming regime via an Online Casino Gambling Bill that would issue up to 15 licenses and introduce new offshore gambling duties on operators serving New Zealand residents.
