Online Gaming in Oceania

Online gaming in Oceania is dominated by online sports and race wagering, with online casino and poker largely restricted or prohibited at the domestic level in Australia and New Zealand, even though residents frequently access offshore sites. Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act 2001 bans operators, whether based in Australia or offshore, from offering online casino games and in-play sports betting to people located in Australia, while allowing regulated online wagering and empowering the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to block and sanction illegal offshore sites. New Zealand has enacted the Online Casino Gambling Act, now in force with supporting regulations issued in 2026. Up to 15 online casino licenses are being issued; the license auction concluded in October 2026 and the fully licensed regime is expected to be operational in 2027. A 12% duty on online casino gambling provided by offshore operators has applied since 1 July 2024. During the transition, online casino advertising is prohibited and no new providers may enter the market.
