Ala. Governor Calls Bingo Machines Illegal

2 February 2009

According to the Birmingham Press-Register, Bob Riley, the Alabama governor, issued a statement last week saying that electronic bingo machines are just like slot machines, and therefore not legal in the state.

However, Troy King, the state’s attorney general, disagrees and said that constitutional amendments allow machines in certain places like Indian casinos, the newspaper said.

“It would be a de facto compact where the Indians are allowed free rein and a monopoly, and the state gets nothing in return,” Mr. King told the Press-Register, speculating on what would happen if electronic bingo machines weren’t allowed elsewhere.
