Betfair to Utilize Datacenter

8 September 2008

Betfair, a betting exchange, has picked ControlCircle to handle its datacenter needs for bet-placing as the company begins virtualization trials.

“In the past, every time we launched a new application, new physical hardware would be deployed,” said Nick Laflin, Betfair’s utility computing program manager, in a prepared statement.

He adds that datacenters are “notoriously underutilized” with server resources staying idle 85 percent of the time.

“This is due to over provisioning where more hardware is bought to handle peak traffic demand,” Mr. Laflin said. “We’re looking carefully at how virtualization can help avoid this while increasing flexibility and saving costs for the company.”
