USA Today reports that the biggest horse race in China since 1949 will take place this week in hopes to make way for future gambling opportunities in a country where placing bets is generally outlawed.
“The amounts bet this week will be small, and it will be a kind of entertainment, but the methods will be more extensive than other places have tried," Qin Zunwen, an economist and gambling advocate, told the paper.
Kicking off on Saturday in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, the China Speed Horse Race Open will hold four races at the Orient Lucky City racecourse with cash prizes, according to China.org.
