Cohen to Be Released

23 March 2004

World Sports Exchange founder Jay Cohen is scheduled to be released today from Nellis Federal Prison. He'll spend one month in a federal prison halfway house and then be placed on supervised release.

Cohen was one of 21 online sports books operators indicted in 1998 in the Southern District of New York for violating the Federal Wire Act. He was the only one to go to trial and was convicted by a jury in March 2000 and sentenced later that year. He lost an appeal and failed in an attempt to have the case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Cohen's legal team is still battling to have Cohen's conviction vacated.

IGN will follow up in coming days with more on the Jay Cohen story.
