Crypto Flips the Switch at William Hill Casino

14 January 2000
British bookmaker William Hill has officially entered the online casino business yesterday via the debut of William Hill Casino, the new online casino operated by William Hill Internet Ventures.

The company struck a software deal with CryptoLogic Inc. subsidiary Intertainet Overseas Licensing Limited (IOLL) in November 1999. A "play for fun" version has been operating online for over a month with users playing with virtual money.

CryptoLogic Senior Vice President Jenny Solursh was outspoken about her company's excitement. "As the dominant player in the U.K., William Hill marks a significant expansion of CryptoLogic's international presence and extension of our global leadership position in the Internet gaming market," Solursh said.

William Hill was founded in the 1930's by Mr. William Hill, who built up the business to become the first U.K. betting company to be listed on the London Stock Exchange. Today, William Hill accounts for an estimated 23 percent of U.K. betting shop turnover from its 1,500 licensed outlets, and it dominates the telephone wagering field with an estimated market share of 42 percent. It was also the first U.K. bookmaker to offer its services over the Internet. In 1998, William Hill had gross wagering turnover of more than 1.8 billion.

CryptoLogic Inc. is a leading software development company serving the fast-growing Internet gaming market. The company's proprietary technologies enable secure, high-speed financial transactions over the Internet.
