European Commission Extends Deadline for France, Greece in Infringement Proceedings

28 August 2007

Brussels has given France and Greece two additional months to respond to its inquiries regarding the non-compliance of the countries' gaming policy with EU law.

On June 27, Greece received a formal request for information from the commission--the first stage of the infringement procedure.

The same day, the commission issued France its reasoned opinion--the second stage of the infringement procedure--which provides information detailing how France is to amend its gaming law to comply with EU rules.

"The deadline for Greece and For France is now Oct. 29," said commission spokesman Oliver Drewes today.

Sweden, also in the second stage of the infringement procedure, has yet to reply to the commission and, evidently, has not requested an extension.

"We have not seen anything from Sweden so far but they did not ask for an extension, so we assume it's on its way," Drewes said.
