Goodlatte Markup Watch Continues

5 June 2002

Today Rep. Bob Goodlatte pulled his Internet gambling prohibition bill from the schedule for Thursday's Judiciary Committee markup session.

According to a Washington, D.C.-based source, Goodlatte's bill was on tap to be marked up on Thursday by the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. Goodlatte, a Republican from Virginia, yanked the bill from the schedule late Wednesday afternoon for reasons that were not immediately made clear, the source said.

The source said several amendments to the bill were likely to have been offered had the markup gone forward, including calls to get rid of all the bill's carve-outs for lotteries and horse racing.

Goodlatte will probably try to reschedule the bill's markup, the Capitol Hill insider said.

The proposal, which would update the Interstate Wire Act to make Internet gambling illegal, is supported by the American Gaming Organization and the lottery and horse racing industries. It is opposed by American Indian gaming and convenience store organizations, the Interactive Gaming Council and the dog and Jai Alai gambling industries.
