Hello Malta

17 March 2000
The Mediterranean island country of Malta has joined the growing list of government-regulated online gambling jurisdictions February 1 by passing legislation that permits the licensing of online bookmakers.

The Malta Business Weekly reports that government officials have already been inundated with licensing requests. U.K. casino operator Stanley Leisure announced earlier this week that it will be among the first to offer an online sports betting service based in the new Net betting jurisdiction.

The Malta legislation requires a 0.5 percent tax to be paid on each betting transaction. Additionally, Malta-licensed bookmakers are not allowed to accept wagers from residents of Malta.
