India's Illegal Lottery Trade Bust

11 September 2008

Indiatimes reports that a series of police raids in Chennai, which in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu, has uncovered illegal lottery tickets worth 1.1 million Indian rupees, or $24,200.

The government banned lotteries in the state five years ago, but illegal sale appears to be thriving. Area police believe the recent raids will quell activity but it won’t be stopped until the brains behind the operation are put behind bars.

”We are close to nabbing the kingpin who supplies the lottery tickets to various agents in the city,” an assistant police commissioner told Indiatimes. “We are hopeful that he will be nabbed within a couple of weeks.”
