Internet Gambling to be Legalized

11 June 1997

Leading Australian newspaper columnist Alex Mitchell of the Sydney Sun Herald claims to have inside information that Internet gambling will be legalized Australia wide by Christmas 1997.

According to Mitchell , over the 'Net gambling will include slots, blackjack, roulette, bingo, baccarat and poker. Australian officials are quoted as saying "The feeling of the [recent] meeting [of state regulators] was that Internet gaming was coming and nothing could stop it".

"So the attitude of everyone at meeting was that Australia should get in first, before America, before Europe, before Asia".

Already the Australian state of the Northern Territory has licensed sports betting, including US sports

This latest news seems to indicate that Australia, like Canada seem to be accepting that the bridge to the 21st century will include a ramp to on-line gaming rather than the dead end US regulators are trying to construct.
