Irish Government Looks at Regulating Club Gaming

2 March 2009

The Irish government could begin a shift in its gambling legislation, which will start with legislation that might license gambling in private members’ clubs, reports the Irish Times.

According to the paper, casinos are illegal in the region, but as many as 50 private clubs have casino games inside.

“In reality, by virtue of introducing regulation, it is likely that some venues may have to close down due to an inability to meet the conditions and standards expected in a regulatory environment,” Dermot Ahern, Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform for the Irish government, told the Times.
