Jamaica may soon be issuing Internet gambling licenses. The Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission has already received at least three applications, although no licenses will be issued until the necessary legislation is in place, said Dennis Chung, one of the commissioners. "Let's put it this way," he added, "we're not turning back applications."
Applying for a license is pretty easy for now. Applicants write to the JBGLC submitting their proposal to run a virtual casino and/or sportsbook. "Of course, they have to submit to us a business plan, including market analysis and financial projections, " Chung explained. "Our purpose is to protect the interests of the public."
Additionally, applicants need to indicate what sort of tax structure is acceptable. Chung added, "We want people to propose to us what is digestible and then we'll negotiate with them."
No deadline has been set for when legislation will be in place for e-gaming. As Chung explained, "Personally, I believe that it is inevitable and we can regulate it or let it regulate us."
He added, "The Commission is very forward thinking and realizes that virtual gaming will happen. Personally, I think in another 10 years it will be so prevalent that no one will be able to ignore it."
A website for licensing applications and more information on the Jamaican gambling situation should launch next month.
