Kentucky Racing Officials Concerned after Breakdowns

9 January 2009
After eight fatal breakdowns at Turfway Park in just one month, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission held a meeting about the situation earlier this week, The Courier-Journal reported.

The increase in fatalities, which the newspaper said was double the number recorded at the track in December 2007, has been attributed to a ban on toe grabs.

The commission's interim chief veterinarian, Bryce Peckham, said that Turfway will once again allow the cleat-like material on the rear horseshoes, the newspaper said.
