Kyl's Offensive

21 June 1999
Armed with the newly released final report of the National Gambling Impact Study Commission, Jon Kyl, Arizona's answer to Chicken Little, is on the offensive against the evils of Internet gambling. In a Washington Times commentary today, Kyl let's us all know that--you guessed it--the sky is falling!

According to Kyl, "at least a billion dollars a year is now being wagered online," a rate of growth that far outstrips "predictions of the experts." He mentions no experts by name, but presumably they include psychics Jean Dixon and Uri Geller.

In another startling revelation, Kyl notes that it's no "secret that gambling is beginning to infect organized sports, as sports betting gains in popularity." Gambling and sports, say it ain't so, Joe... I mean, Jon. The answer to these possible potential problems, of course, is to ban Internet gambling. In this way, the good senator tells us in a statement crafted to appeal to the rational mind, the citizens of the United States will be protected from those who seek to "nationalize gambling in America by bringing it to every state, county, town, neighborhood--in fact to every household."

Good thing for us lemmings Senator Kyl is watching out for us.
