Ladbrokes to Launch Gibraltar Phone Betting Service

20 October 1999
Ladbrokes launches its freephone betting service for United Kingdom customers tomorrow from Gibralter, imposing a 3 percent handling charge from that tax-free haven rather than the 9 percent charged in Great Britain.

Ladbrokes' competitor Victor Chandler, also based in Gibralter since May, introduced the 3 percent charge. Ladbrokes' John OĆReilly told the Racing Post "We are expecting to recruit thousands of customers each month, and will be launching a tax-free internet betting service early next year. Reducing the minimum stake will bring in new clients from the Far East and, with the launch of our service to the UK, we will need to manage our expansion. I hope to reduce the minimum stake further."
