Lawmaker Believes Slots Could Save Neb. Racetracks

21 January 2009

Nebraska Senator Russ Karpisek has proposed an amendment to the state constitution to legalize slot machines at racetracks, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

If approved, the amendment would legalize up to 3,500 electronic and video gaming machines at horse tracks across the state, according to the Associated Press.

“In this economy, we need to help everybody stay in business,” Mr. Karpisek told the news service. “This is a limited form of gambling -- slot machines at race tracks that already have gambling.”

The Omaha World-Herald said that Nebraska voters have rejected a gambling expansion at least four times since 1938.
