A Democratic lawyer in New Mexico has called on the US government to place a one per cent tax on video games and video game equipment in a bid to raise funds to fight childhood obesity in the state. Gail Chasey said her 'Leave No Child Inside' proposal would raise $4 million annually which would be used to promote a healthier lifestyle and to provide children with outdoor learning experiences.
The Sierra Club environmental group, which is backing the bill, said the items being taxed would have to be "carefully chosen" because of their links to obesity and poor school performance.
Around one-quarter of New Mexico's children are classed as obese or overweight, according to recent studies in the state.
