Macau Limits Stay Period of Mainland Chinese

17 July 2008

Macau's government has imposed tighter travel restrictions on mainland Chinese visiting the city.

Beginning August 1, Chinese passport holders who stop in Macau before traveling to another destination shall only be allowed to stay in the city for seven days. Previously the limit was 14 days.

Any individual who does not actually go on to the third destination shall only be permitted to stay in the city for two days if he applies for entry again under the same circumstances. If again the person fails to go on to his third destination than he shall be prohibited from entering Macau again.

Another new restriction beginning September 1 prohibits mainland residents with permission to travel to Hong Kong from entering Macau.

Macau's Public Security Forces Affairs department says the new travel restrictions are needed to "[limit] abuses of Macao's immigration policy by Chinese passport holders."
