Malaysia Cracks Down

26 January 2000
Another nation is taking a stance against online gambling. Police in the largely Muslim nation of Malaysia have been cracking down on cybercafe owners who promote Net betting. In fact, the national police chief reportedly is calling for a stronger response, suggesting that the busted cybercafe owners who are convicted should be banished to remote provinces. The national police are expected to make such a recommendation to the Home Ministry.

Recently, several people have been arrested and a number of computers confiscated during the move to stop Internet gambling in Malaysia. Police have reportedly identified at least 21 such businesses in Kuala Lumpur.

Muslims, who are a majority in Malaysia, are forbidden to participate in any type of gambling. Other groups have limited access to gambling under the Malaysian government.
