The full Judiciary Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday will markup six bills, including Rep. Bob Goodlatte's, R-Va., HR 4777, the "Internet Gambling Prohibition Act", and Rep. James Leach's, R-Iowa, HR 4411, the "Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006."
The markups are slated to begin at 10 AM (EST) and will be viewable via a webstream on the Judiciary Committee's Web site, http://judiciary.house.gov.
The markups of the two Internet gambling-related bills are necessary because the Judiciary Committee's sequential referral on Leach's bill is set to expire on May 26. The chairman of the Judiciary Committee, James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisc., had requested an extension of the time period in which his committee could consider Leach's bill because his committee faces a heavy workload, but the House Republican Leadership denied his request.
It is expected that Goodlatte will submit a revised form of his bill that seeks to address concerns about the lack of clarity with regard to remote horse race wagering exemptions that arose in early April when the bill was heard before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.
Other bills to be considered Thursday include HR 5417, the "Internet Freedom and Nondiscrimination Act of 2006"; HR 4894, "To provide for certain access to national crime information databases by schools and educational agencies for employment purposes, with respect to individuals who work with children”; HR 5318, the “Cyber-Security Enhancement and Consumer Data Protection Act of 2006”; and HR 4127, the “Data Accountability and Trust Act (DATA).”
