MGM Mirage has entered into a joint venture to build a luxury hotel complex in Tianjin, a northern coastal city of China. The project does not involve a casino or any other type of gambling.
Chinese firm Diaoyutai State Guesthouse is MGM Mirage's joint venture partner in the project. The two companies have signed definitive agreements to provide development and management services to another Chinese company, Sinosteel International Plaza Co, for whom the project is named.
Sinosteel International Plaza will be built in two phases and consist of two towers. In addition to the luxury hotel, the complex will boast residential, conference and office space.
In the 88-floor main tower, Diaoyutai/MGM Grand Hotel Management Co. will develop and operate a 350-room luxury hotel called MGM Grand Tianjin, a 50-suite Skylofts at MGM Grand facility, and 60 luxury MGM Grand condominium residences, together with related spa, restaurant and ancillary facilities.
The project will break ground later this month.
Like other projects in Connecticut and Abu Dhabi, Sinosteel International Plaza is part of a broad MGM Mirage strategy to build its brands into recognizable luxury hotel names. The company says it will open other luxury hotels and resorts with Diaoyutai State Greenhouse in other major Chinese markets.
