N.Y. Lottery Abandons Money-Saving Scheme

3 March 2009

After the New York Daily News reported that The New York Lottery wanted to dump its scholarship program to save about $1.4 million, the lottery reversed its plan, according to the Associated Press.

Carolyn Hapeman, a spokesperson for the lottery, told the Associated Press that the events had no correlation, but added that the lottery had stopped accepting application for the $5,000 scholarships.

According to the Daily News, the state lottery distributed 53 percent of its $7.5 billion income for 2008 in prizes and education.
