THROWN OUT A federal appeals court in the United States on Tuesday threw out the conviction of David H. Safavian, the former head of procurement policies at the White House Office of Management and Budget, according to the New York Times.
Mr. Safavian's case was overturned by the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, two years after he was convicted of obstruction of justice and lying to a Senate investigation committee about his dealings with Jack Abramoff, the disgraced lobbyist.
Mr. Safavian, who in 2006 was sentenced to 18 months in prison by Judge Paul L. Friedman of Federal District Court in Washington, D.C., is free pending appeals.
The appeals court threw out certain charges against Mr. Safavian, while decreeing that he was entitled to a new trial on others.
The Justice Department is studying the unanimous decision by the three-member appeals court panel to determine what to do next, a department spokeswoman told The Times.
