Makin' Deals --The three largest P2P betting exchanges in the United Kingdom could be announcing an alliance within the week that would be designed to counter criticism from traditional bookmakers. Betfair, Betdaq and Sporting Options have all been outspoken about proposed recommendations in a recent parliamentary report on new gambling laws. Some of the recommendations would change the way punters on exchanges are taxed and make it mandatory for frequent users of the system to register. Andrew Silverman, Betfair's director of public affairs said the companies were discussing the possibility of forming a betting exchange trade body.

New Service -- U.S.-based ISP giant America Online unveiled plans today for a broadband gaming site that features a number of Web-based and premium downloadable games. The site is the result of a new partnership between AOL and developers GameHouse Studios and Funkitron. The site will also offer games from Electronic Arts' Pogo.com. AOL for Broadband also launched an original streaming video program, Face Off, produced by g-Net media, about gaming, which includes competitions between AOL members and professional gamers as well as reviews, hints, cheats and gaming news.

UK News -- Shares in Newsplayer Group rose more than 8 percent Thursday as the provider of video-on-demand services was granted exclusivity in talks to acquire a 20 percent shareholding of Satellite Information Services for £20 million. The exclusivity period, granted by United Business Media, which is selling its stake, lasts until July 28, during which time, Newsplayer's directors hope to raise the funds and complete due diligence.SIS provides bookmakers with live television pictures, data display systems and broadcast services.

The Emerald Isle -- More information came to light Thursday regarding the plans of U.K. bookmaker Victor Chandler to expand its operations into Ireland. The company's new Web site aimed at Irish punters has met with great success. Now Victor Chandler said he hopes to open an anchor betting shop in the heart of Dublin by year's end as part of a three-year plan to expand the company into Ireland. The company also hopes to have an on-course presence at some of the "more obvious" venues.

-BetOnSports' David Carruthers, commenting on the his upcoming sumo wrestling match verses Cole Turner from BoDog. The two will square off in one of six duels at the First Annual Charity Sumo Grudge Match. The event will take place May 19 at the culmination of the at the Global Interactive Gaming Summit & Expo in Toronto. Its purpose, aside from adding some fun to the exposition, is to raise money for GamCare, a British association promoting responsible gambling.
