New UK Study Assesses Industry -- A study published by the U.K. Department of Culture, Media and Sport demonstrates that online gambling has more than doubled in the last five years. The study was commissioned prior to the U.S. Net gambling crackdown and was referenced during the remote gaming summit held at Britain's Royal Ascot racecourse on Tuesday. According to the study, 2,300 online gaming sites exist worldwide, with gaming-friendly jurisdictions like Antigua (537) and Costa Rica (474) shouldering a sizable load. The U.K. has 70 online betting sites but no poker, blackjack, roulette or other gaming sites. The study reportedly recommended greater international cooperation, including agreed-upon regulations to curb problem and youth gambling; greater cooperation within the gambling industry; and new research initiatives to assess the extent of participation in online gambling.
