Nevada Regulators Examine Viability of I-Gaming Regulation

3 December 2007

The University of Nevada Las Vegas' International Gaming Institute is conducting research into the viability of regulating Internet gambling in the State of Nevada.

The study, commissioned by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, is intended to show lawmakers the pros and cons of Internet gambling, in order to provide them with the necessary information to decide whether or not to regulate it.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, the IGI study will measure how many of the state's citizens participate in online gambling and their attitudes toward legalizing the activity.

Las Vegas gaming attorney Tony Cabot told the Sun that the study is important because it could show that enough money is still going to offshore operators -- despite last year's Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act -- to warrant considering regulation within the state.

Regarding the study's results, however, the industry will have to wait.

Patricia Becker, executive director of the IGI, told IGN that the study is confidential to the GCB at this time, but they plan to release the results at a meeting in January.
