A new report by the Labor Resource Center of the University of Massachusetts at Boston says that casinos are an excellent source of good-paying jobs with good benefits for non-college educated workers.
According to the study, which looked at casino-related jobs in Connecticut, Louisiana, Nevada, New Jersey and New York, casinos pay higher salaries and offer better benefits packages than non-gaming jobs.
The study began two years ago when Deval Patrick, the governor of Massachusetts, first proposed the development of three casinos as a revenue stream for the state. His proposal was heavily opposed last session by Salvatore DiMasi, the former House Speaker. o retired last week to be replaced by Representative Robert DeLeo, a Democrat who has expressed a willingness to consider Mr. Patrick's proposal.
Susan Moir, director of the center, denied any connection between the release of the study and the assent of Mr. DeLeo, according to the Boston Herald.
