New York Update

31 May 1997

Apparently, the hot topic in the New York legislature is rent control in New York City. That may preclude any movement in several reasoned internet gambling bills offered by the Senate Committee on Racing, Gaming and Wagering.

According to Committee Counsel, Heather Bennett, there were several bills on the topic. Two which seemed to offer a reasoned approach to the perplexing issue of regulating internet gambling will probably not be acted on before the session ends in June.

One of these is SB 4174 which requires internet gambling operators who choose to do busy in New York to register with the state. The second SB 4186 would require these operators to post bond in "an amount to be determined by the New York State Racing and Wagering Commission.

Keep an eye out for these bills to reappear next session. And kudos to Senator Larkin and his New York Senate Committee members for being in the forefront of learning about these complex issues and taking reasonable measures to protect online gaming customers in their state.
