No Tax Rate Cut for U.K. Bingo Halls

27 February 2009

The value-added tax, or V.A.T. rates will not be decreased for bingo halls in the United Kingdom, the British Broadcasting Corporation said on Thursday.

While some members of Parliament believe the V.A.T. rates have played into the closure of bingo halls across the country, others see different factors at play, according to the BBC.

“Our assessment remains that tax is not at the root of the industry's problems and nor do we believe that alteration of the tax regime would be an appropriate solution to them,” Angela Eagle, member of Parliament and exchequer secretary to the U.K. Treasury, was quoted by the BBC as saying.
