OLG Audit Produces Surprising Results

6 February 2009
An independent audit of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation's company data revealed that lottery "insiders" took home $198 million in prizes in the past 13 years, nearly twice the amount previously estimated.

The Crown Corporation, which oversees Ontario's lotteries, slots and casinos, had originally assessed insider winnings at $106 million, or 1.7 percent, according to the Toronto Star. But Deloitte & Touche performed a historical analysis on data from July 1, 1995 to June 30, 2008 to help the company crack down on insider fraud.

According to the lottery company, "insiders," is more broadly defined now than it was 13 years ago. It includes company employees, lottery retailers, family members and those living with company employees or lottery retailer, which is what boosted the numbers.
