Playtech on the Hunt for Acquisitions

10 August 2007

Playtech is reportedly on the hunt for European acquisitions to feed its growing casino and poker network, and to bolster its position among its European competitors.

Playtech Vice Chairman Avigur Zmora told Reuters today that the firm was looking to acquire the business and assets of certain of its rivals to strengthen its position in Europe.

"We think that this is the right time to prepare the company to be almost the only alternative out there," Zmora said.

Zmora added that while the company has yet to set its sights on a particular target, it recognizes that some of its European rivals are "relatively small in market value" and are "usually cash rich."

The company's acquisition of Tribeca Tables last November spurred a 50 percent-jump in poker revenue between Q1 and Q2 2007.

The $75 million sale enabled Playtech to absorb business from a number of Net gambling Web sites that operated on Tribeca's poker software platform, including VC poker, PaddyPower Poker, Blue Square Poker and Expekt.

Zmora, the company's former chief executive, said it would look to add sports-betting software to its product offering, as it, like 888, has adopted a "one-stop-shop" strategy.

"We want to have a sportsbook offer to give the whole suit of services to our licensees," he said.
