Poker Players Alliance Gets Political

25 August 2008

It’s no surprise that a group named Poker Players Alliance would be in favor of online poker play. What’s surprising is that the group, comprised of mostly United States Republicans, has set out to change that party’s platform.

By using a write-in campaign, the group aims eliminate the anti-online gambling words in the Republican Party’s platform, which since 2004 has read: “Millions of Americans suffer from problem or pathological gambling that can destroy families. We support legislation prohibiting gambling over the Internet or in student athletics by student athletes who are participating in competitive sports.”

John Pappas, spokesman for the Poker Players Alliance, told the Las Vegas Sun on Thursday that despite the majority’s Republican background, it is not partisan and will consider each party’s opinion on the matter.
