Prevalence Rate in UK Remains Unchanged

6 May 2008

A Gambling Commission survey into the prevalence of remote gambling among people in the UK finds that about 8.8 percent of adults surveyed said they had participated in some form of remote gambling in the previous month.

The figure is exactly the same as the figure for the 2007 calendar year and is slightly higher than the 2006 calendar year figure of 7.2 percent.

The most popular form of remote gambling is on the National Lottery, with 6.3 percent of respondents participating. Only 5.1 percent of respondents participated in some form of remote gambling that was not through the National Lottery.

A computer, laptop or handheld unit is the most popular device for remote gamblers (7.1 percent of respondents), followed by the mobile phone (2.4 percent) and interactive/digital TV (under 2 percent).

The survey, conducted by ICM Research, also shows that remote gamblers are more likely to be male than female and more likely to be aged 18-34.
