Surge in Gaming Contributions for Detroit Congress Members

3 September 2008

Detroit News reports that gaming contributions have been pouring in for Democratic Representatives John Conyers and Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Ms. Kilpatrick has received $44,250 of gaming contributions this election cycle, and Mr. Conyers has received $88,899 of the same type of contributions along with funds from political action committees.

The paper reports that Mr. Conyers -- a non-Nevadan -- is now the fourth largest recipient of gambling contributions in the House of Representatives.

“(The Pokers Players Alliance) are trying to get poker federal law in the United States to tax, license and regulate poker (for money) on the Internet,” Mark Tenner, a Las Vegas gaming consultant, told Detroit news about the contributions.
