Surveillance System Catches Blackjack Cheats

Card counting and other unethical win methods have plagued casinos for decades. Now an Irish math student believes he has the answer, reports The London Times.

Wesley Cooper, a Ph.D. student, has designed a surveillance system that is able to point out those counting cards. The system uses video camera along with statistical analysis to profile players and spot game play irregularities.

“Blackjack is beatable if you have a good math brain,” Mr. Cooper told the paper. “At the moment, casino surveillance staff have to watch the tables and try to identify suspicious play using their experience and instincts. This system does the same job automatically using computer-vision techniques and algorithms.”
