Thais Spend $15.2 Million on Illegal Euro 2008 Bets

1 July 2008

Police in Thailand have arrested over 1,000 people on charges related to illegal gambling on the Euro 2008 tournament.

"There were 1,098 people arrested including 192 bookies, 831 punters and 75 others," Major General Ruangsak Jaritake told the Economic Times.

Police have discovered betting slips worth about 524.2 million baht ($15.7 million) but have seized only 931,496 baht ($28,000).

"We are satisfied with our arrests although we cannot arrest everybody. We focus on preventative measures," Jaritake added.

Many arrests resulted from earlier tipoffs because Ruangsak has called upon indebted gamblers who receive threats from bookies to turn themselves in.

"Football gambling is not a serious offence," he said. "It's better than facing a threat to your lives."
