The Coalition Speaks

15 April 1999
The anti-cyber gambling bandwagon continues to gain momentum as the Kyl Bill awaits markup in the Senate. The Christian Coalition threw in their two cents this week in a letter prepared by Director of Government Relations Jeffrey K. Taylor.

With or without further ado, here's how it went:

Dear Senator:

Senator John Kyl (R-AZ) has recently introduced legislation that will protect families and children from the gambling industry's illegal and rapidly expanding business of on-line gambling. Christian Coalition endorses Senator Kyl's bill, entitled the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act (S. 692), and urges all Senators to support this legislation.

Internet gambling is a direct threat to the stability of families and communities across America. Because of the quickness and ease to which people can gamble on-line, and quickly become addicted, many families and homes are destroyed as a result. Increased crime, family breakdown and youth addiction are severe consequences of gambling which will only compound if gambling on the Internet is allowed to proliferate unchecked.

Internet gambling is unique from every other type of gambling. It is dangerously unregulated, increasing the opportunity for on-line gambling sites to engage in illegal fraudulent exchanges. Furthermore, on-line gambling evades individual state laws thwarting the will of many states that do not wish to legalize the activity within their borders. But worst of all, it brings all forms of gambling directly into every home, school, library and business that is wired, pouring fuel on to the explosively addictive nature of gambling.

Christian Coalition recognizes that the illegal Internet gambling industry falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government's delegated power to oversee interstate commerce. Therefore, we endorse the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act (S. 692) and urge you to support this important bill.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey K. Taylor
