The Internet, P.O. & Latvia

17 July 2000
That's the order of business for the House of Representatives tonight, as H.R. 3125, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, comes up for a vote under suspension of the rules.

The bill, and six others, are scheduled for one-minute votes, after 40 minutes of discussion, 20 for Democrats and 20 for Republicans.

Along with H.R. 3125, other key issues of gravity to be voted on--each getting a minute--are the naming of a post office in Miramar City, Florida and congratulations to the Republic of Latvia on its independence from the Soviet Union.

Under suspension of the rules, a two-thirds vote of the House is needed. In the event the Internet ban does not pass, it would be rescheduled for normal consideration. If it does pass, as expected, next stop is conference on the Senate version. Voting will take place at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
