At the end of March, the Alderney Gambling Control Commission issued its yearly report. The report is an overview of the group's activities and business from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2002.
When the committee was established in May 2000, the legislation enabling the operation of online gambling sites was had not been approved yet. The States of Alderney passed the necessary legislation in 2001. At that time, three companies had already received online betting licenses from Alderney: International Sports Betting Ltd, which never operated and is no longer licensed; Bonne Terre Ltd., which moved to the United Kingdom in October of 2001; and Sportingbet (Alderney) Ltd., which stopped taking bets in July of 2002 because the commission did not approve of its system of internal controls.
As an organization, the commission has issued a new crop of online gaming licenses to companies including Ritz Interactive Ltd., Littlewoods Alderney Ltd., and VI Ltd., which is a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands Inc.--the operator of the The Venetian casino and hotel in Las Vegas.
John Godfrey, the chairman of the commission, states that the commission has taken in £410,650 in revenues during 2002 and spent £363,513 to maintain its operations.
Interestingly, the report also noted that three companies--CryptoLogic Alderney Ltd., Betsson Ltd. and Toto Sport Ltd. applied for electronic betting licenses in Alderney and then withdrew their applications before they could be considered.
