Cisco Systems Releases New Software
Trying to beef up the ability of multi-protocol label switching to handle traffic engineering, Cisco Systems Inc. this week released software that lets MPLS exploit differentiated services, a standard for prioritizing network traffic. Marketed under the name MPLS Guaranteed Bandwidth Services, the new technology targets service providers as well as customers like bandwidth brokers, who sell fractions of their fiber capacity to various buyers. The features could also be used for voice trunking, to map individual customers to a virtual connection in the network. Traffic engineering is the process of adjusting bandwidth allocations to ensure enough is left for high-priority traffic. In MPLS traffic engineering, the upstream router creates a network tunnel for a particular traffic stream, then fixes the bandwidth available for that tunnel. This lets Internet protocol match the abilities of asynchronous traffic mode or frame relay, which both offer that capability under private virtual channels (PVCs).
