Samsung to Release Smart Phones
Samsung Electronics this week said it was planning to release a series of "smart phones" powered by the
operating system behind Palm's range of handheld computers. The announcement raised the stakes in the emerging market for next generation handsets, which lets callers surf the Internet and access address books and other personal organizer programs. It also gave a vote of confidence in Palm's operating system, which competes against Microsoft and the Psion-led Symbian alliance in the market for handset software. Samsung Electronics said the phone would hit the North American market in the second quarter of 2001.

Microsoft Releases Beta Version of Whistler Embedded
Stepping up its efforts in embedded computing, Microsoft Corp. announced the beta release of its Whistler
Embedded operating system this week. The company hopes this modular or "componentized" version of Windows NT Embedded 4.0 will appeal to embedded system developers. By delivering the new embedded system just 48 days after the beta one release of the Whistler operating system, Microsoft also is sending a message that it is serious about stepping up its commitment to the embedded side of the computing business. Earlier this year, the software giant reorganized its embedded systems group and promised to deliver an embedded version of any major Windows release within 90 days of its commercial release. The move was seen as a concession to Microsoft's dismal performance in the increasingly important embedded market.
