Web Access Coming to Airports, Travelers
If airlines and electronic companies have their way, travelers who find themselves in airport terminals waiting for a delayed or cancelled flight, will soon have a new way to pass the time. Several airlines are interested in installing wireless Internet access in airport terminals and lounges which would allow travelers to work, surf the Web or even watch digital movies. Delta Air Lines is already offering the service at its terminal in Vancouver, British Columbia, and plans to have it available by the end of next year in its main hub cities, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Dallas-Fort Worth. United Airlines, which had the worst on-time performance in August among the major carriers, announced plans to start its own Internet service next year at 30 airports.

Long-Awaited Gateway Web Appliance to be Released Friday
Sources close to Gateway 2000 Inc., the well known PC manufacturer and retailer, have said the long-awaited Web appliance will be released Friday in partnership with America Online, Broadcom and Transmeta. The San Diego, Calif.-based company also is expected to outline its vision for the connected home. Unlike PCs, Web appliances are simple-function devices largely used for quick access to content on the Internet or for sending email. Gateway unfurled prototypes of the product in April and promised that other devices would follow. Gateway had been expected to unveil the product next week at the Comdex trade show, but instead will make the announcement at a New York event on Friday. Gateway's Web appliance will use Transmeta's Crusoe processor, sources said. The processor has come under fire recently, after IBM canceled plans to use it in ThinkPad portables. To date, Transmeta's chips have been used almost exclusively in portable devices.
