After a year-and-a-half of stalling, the U.S. District Court has finally set a court date for Jay Cohen, one of the operators of World Sports Exchange, an online sportsbook based in Antigua.
The Court issued complaints against Cohen, along with 20 other persons affiliated with offshore sportsbooks, alleging that he conspired to violate the Interstate Wire Act, which makes it illegal to accept bets on sporting events over the telephone across state borders.
Unlike the rest of the group, Cohen has been pushing since day one to have his case heard--his approach supported by the notion that the system will work in his favor. His attorneys and he believe that the Court doesn't have a case, and judging by the Court's inability to get this thing rolling, they're probably right.
In February, a judge denied an attempt to have Cohen's indictment dismissed. Finally, several months later, a jury trial has been scheduled for September 13.
