U.S. Economic Downturn Affects Native American Casino Operators

14 August 2008

While Nevada’s gambling revenue suffered a 1.1 percent drop in June, Moody's Investors Service has released a report showing a similar occurrence for Native American Casino Operators in the United States.

According to the report, seven of 12 Moody's-rated Native American gaming issuers experienced a decline in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the first quarter of 2008, compared to the same period last year.

"Though a number of Native American casino operators enjoy market exclusivity and favorable demographics, they are still exposed to the risks of declining visitation and gaming revenues," said Jacques Ouazana, an analyst with Moodys, in a research report.

“A prolonged, nationwide consumer-driven recession could result in some negative rating actions for Native American gaming operators," Mr. Ouazana continued, "but many operators possess sound financial profiles that should see them through."
