UK Offshore Crackdown Continues

A loophole in U.K. law which allows offshore operators to advertise their odds and products on Teletext will be closed in an effort to save the government millions of pounds in lost revenue.

A Treasury spokesperson said, "Strengthening the advertising ban is just a first step and we are considering a whole range of measures in the run-up to the Budget. "In May, Ireland dropped their betting surcharge to 5 percent and the three largest bookmakers in the UK moved offshore to set up telephone betting operations that offered a lower 3 percent surcharge. In Britain the total surcharge is 9 percent.
