UKGC Releases Latest Snapshot of Adult Remote Gambling Participation

31 July 2007

The U.K. Gambling Commission has released the latest figures from its quarterly statistical series that gauges adult participation in remote gambling.

The commission, which last published results from the series in February, said that this go-around it had fine-tuned its method of data collection, such that the new measure now distinguishes between the "full range of remote gambling methods"--that is, gambling via personal computer, mobile phone or interactive television.

According to the survey, over the four quarters ending June 2007, 8.6 percent of the 8,000 adults surveyed said they had participated in at least one form of remote gambling in the previous month, compared to 7.4 percent during the previous-year period. The remaining 91.4 percent of respondents indicated on the other hand that they had not participated in any form of remote gambling.

With regard to gender, the commission said, the results show that males are more likely to participate in remote gambling than females, and are likely to fall between the age of 18 and 34.

Of the three methods surveyed, remote gambling via a computer was most popular (6.7 percent), compared to 5.2 percent during 2006. Gambling via mobile phone (2.9 percent) was second-most popular, with gambling via interactive television (1.8 percent) third.
