US Congressman Confirms Effort to Repeal UIGEA

14 March 2007

U.S. Congressman Barney Frank, D-Mass., confirmed today that he is working on legislation to repeal the ban on Internet gambling.

Frank, an 11-term congressman, has long been a foe of the efforts to ban online gambling in the United States. He has called the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, enacted in October 2006, one of the "stupidest laws" ever passed.

"I am working on legislation to cut back on this Internet gambling thing … I think it's preposterous," he said.

Frank told the Financial Times that the legislation is currently in the "thinking stage," but offered no details on the proposal. However, he alluded to the idea of regulating and taxing the Internet gambling industry in the United States.

Calls to the House Committee on Financial Services were unreturned. IGN will continue to cover this story as it develops.
