The U.S. Department of Justice today requested a two-week extension in the matter between the U.S. government and the Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association (iMEGA).
iMEGA on June 5 filed a lawsuit in U.S. Circuit Court 3 (New Jersey) seeking a temporary restraining order (TRO) against the United States from enforcing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), alleging the law is unconstitutional on several counts. And on July 11, the organization filed a motion to speed up the TRO.
The DOJ filed today's motion on the grounds that no previous extension has been obtained; they were not served with the suit until June 18 and the original deadline to respond would expire on Aug. 17.
Other defendants in the case include the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Reserve Board, which are jointly responsible for writing and enforcing the regulations for the UIGEA.
